A COUNTRY SO RICH

Mali from Mopti to the Sahara Desert

Photos by SKYE VON DER OSTEN Text by NICOLA CREARY

Photographs are simply a gift, being able to transport you to another time and another place. To visit a country, you have to only look at the visions in front of you, drawn to the faces of the people, and through their eyes, and the lens of the photographer, you can smell the land and bend to touch the sand. It takes a moment to be transported there, to the heat of the sun, and feel the passion and history of the earth through the many colors of fabric, skin and soil. The hope is to share these lost countries with you, to expose the beauty, the poverty, the wonder of a land that is not often visited, to show the startling beauty that is Mali.

The photographs in this book attempt to showcase the beauty of this land, through the faces of the people, the color and the visual feast, as the diversity of the inhabitants of this fertile country are rich in the soul and heart of all.

The quest is to take you on a journey through Mali, from the scorched red landscape of Mopti, through the streets of color and sound, over to the ancient culture of Dogon Country, on to Port de Korioume which is the gateway to Timbuktu, and finally trying to gain a scope of what it feels like to see the Sahara Desert.
